Toshiba Thrive 7 Review - In the vast sea of Android tablets, it can take a bit to stand out. Toshiba managed to do so with the original Thrive tablet thanks to a bevy of full-size ports that no other tablet saw fit to include. On the other hand, a good many other Android tablets are thinner and lighter, too. But the Thrive bucked that trend and gained a decent following.

The Toshiba Thrive 7, as its name implies, scales things down a bit. Gone is the 10-inch display, trading it in for a 7-inch display. It's not terribly svelte, but neither is it horribly heavy, and Toshiba's seen fit to include a good number of ports and features unseen on other tablets. But it's also got a couple of quirks that have left us banging our heads against the tablet.

Build Quality And Design Toshiba Thrive 7

Like its big brother, the Toshiba Thrive is ugly. Instead of the friendly, inviting design you'd find in the Asus Transformer Prime or Samsung Galaxy Tabs, the tablet feels stiff and rigid. It has the same rippled rubbery backing as the original Thrive (which I enjoy the feel of, not the look), but this time you can't remove it to access the battery. It's as if Toshiba is only trying to appeal to the hardcore techie crowd that cares more about a tablet's ports and specs than its aesthetics. I guess that's ok, depending on what you want in a tablet.

Still, it feels like Toshiba just took the 10-inch Thrive and shrunk it down with little regard to the original's flaws. The Thrive 7 is far too thick and boxy, yet it's deceptively light, almost hollow feeling. That's not a good thing. Whenever the internal motor goes off for vibrations, it feels like the entire tablet is rattling. It disturbed me so much the first time it happened that I decided I was better off disabling vibrations altogether.

Speaking of ports, the Thrive does have plenty them. After all, that was the concept of the original model: let users unlock the tablet's full functionality with memory cards, video out, etc. This time around, Toshiba decided forgo full-sized ports in favor of the micro-sized ones we're seeing pop up in other Android tablets. After pulling open a tiny hatch below the lock key and volume rocker, you'll find Micro HDMI out, a Mini USB port, and a Micro SD card slot.

By the way, I wasn't crazy about the hatch. It's hardly the most elegant way to keep the ports hidden. Plus it just kind of hangs there on a flimsy rubber thread while you're using one of them. The ports are amazing, and I'm glad Toshiba added them to the Thrive 7. But I don't think a tablet needs to sacrifice design in order to offer expandability and customization. Look at the Asus Transformer Prime, for example. It's thin, beautiful, durable, and still has room for a Micro SD card slot and HDMI out. I wish Toshiba put some more thought into the Thrive 7's design instead of just shrinking down the 10-inch version.

At the end of the day, the Thrive 7 just doesn't have the look, feel, and finish that its competitors do.

Yes, There Are Some Good Things To Say

I know I just spent a lot of time trashing the Thrive 7's design. But looking beyond that, the tablet isn't all bad. On the inside, the Thrive has a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. Both do an excellent job at handling gaming graphics, smooth Web browsing, and multitasking. Even though the processor is almost a year old, it still holds up nicely. You won't have a problem.

Toshiba offers two storage options for the Thrive 7, 16 GB and 32 GB. If you end up buying one, I'd suggest going for the cheaper 16 GB model and using a SD card if you need more storage beyond that. You'll save $50.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. Granted, all tablet speakers generally sound like crap, but what I liked about the Thrive 7 was its volume range. (Toshiba has a volume booster built into the settings.) It's loud, which really helps if you want to watch a video without headphones.

The display is more than adequate too, especially compared to other tablets out there. You get a 1280 x 800 resolution, although there's not enough juice in the processor to display true 720p HD on the Thrive. Still, video looks great at such a high resolution. No complaints here.

Going toe to toe with the other big-name 7-inch tablets out there, the Thrive 7 definitely holds its own. Thanks to Honeycomb, you'll get better productivity apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Talk, etc.) than what you'll find on the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet. Because of its ports, you'll be able to do a lot more with the Thrive 7 than you can with Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Samsung's offering does have a Micro SD slot, but you'll need an extra dongle for HDMI out. And good luck connecting a camera.

Display And Battery Life for Toshiba Thrive 7

The Thrive 7's display is absolutely gorgeous. 1280x800 resolution looks great on a 7" tablet, and puts the device in a class of its own. Text looks smoother and sharper, web pages read better, images are more crisp, and the whole Honeycomb UI just looks nicer for it. One problem I had with the Tab 7.0 Plus was that its relatively low pixel density made it difficult to fit a lot of content onto the screen, an issue the Thrive 7 definitely does not have. Viewing angles are also significantly better on the Thrive 7, with less brightness and color distortion. Screen glare has also been reduced compared to the first Thrive
It isn't perfect, though. The Thrive 7's display doesn't get all that bright, meaning sunlight reading may prove difficult unless you've got the brightness maxed, and even then it may not be quite enough. And even though there's more pixels, you're still limited to the 5x6 icon arrangement on each homescreen - the icons are just smaller.
The display has one other flaw, and this one is in the touch department. Oftentimes, the Thrive 7's display will selectively not respond to touch input. It happens most often with the lockscreen (the lock will simply not move for 2-3 seconds, then upon a second or third attempt, will) and the software function buttons. The latter makes for a truly frustrating issue at times - the back and home buttons will not respond to any input unless the display is powered on and off again. The same will happen sometimes with the clock and settings area on the right. This really should have been ironed out by Toshiba before the product was released. The issue probably lies somewhere in the device's firmware, but it's possible Toshiba could have tweaked something with the software, as well.
Battery life is, sadly, disappointing. To start on a positive note, standby time has been greatly improved from the original Thrive, which I found would often run itself out of juice relatively quickly when it sat unused for a couple of days. The Toshiba Thrive 7 seems to hold a charge much better, lasting 2-3 days with no significant drain on the battery (maybe 10-15%). Unfortunately, it's downhill from there. The Thrive 7's claimed battery life is a mere 6 hours (so, expect up to 6 hours of 720p video playback at moderate brightness). If you start playing a CPU-intensive game like Dungeon Defenders, you'll be out of a juice in half that time. Crank up the brightness? Even less. For web browsing and such, you'll get more, but I wouldn't expect much beyond 4 hours. For eReading at low brightness, you'll more easily get to that 6 hours. But otherwise, it really is that bad.

Toshiba Thrive 7: Stuck On Honeycomb

The Toshiba Thrive 7 ships with very little customization to Honeycomb. There are a few Toshiba-branded apps for minor functions like printing documents or updating your tablet, but it's pretty much stock Honeycomb beyond that. That means you're stuck with all the same gripes I've had with the OS since day one: Horrible app selection, glitchy browser, crashes, etc. A lot has been improved since Google released Honeycomb 3.2, which ships with the Thrive 7, but now that Honeycomb is about to be put to rest in favor of Ice Cream Sandwich, you're not going to get many more updates beyond that.
I'm not going to go into too much detail about Honeycomb, since not much has changed with it over the last few months. However, this was my first time testing the OS on a 7-inch tablet. Honeycomb scales down nicely to a smaller screen, much better than I thought it would. Things like notifications and the function buttons tend to get a little crowded in the task bar when using the Thrive in portrait mode, but it's not bad enough to impede any functionality.
Also, you should know Toshiba doesn't have any plans right now to provide an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich on the Thrive 7. That means there's a very good chance you're going to be stuck with Honeycomb for as long as you own the device. Keep that in mind

Tech News - The LG Nitro HD for AT&T Wireless comes with some seriously heavy expectations to meet. It was back in August, when we first reported about the award winning AH-IPS screen with HD resolution, developed by LG. The unit is reportedly better than anything else on the market, including Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus displays, and the Nitro HD is the first device to feature it in the United States. It also stands out as the first device in AT&T’s impressive smartphone lineup to feature an HD screen.

It is the end of 2011 and all the cards are on the table. The LG Nitro HD is the last major player to enter the uber-smartphone competition. It surely has a spec sheet up to snuff: an HD screen to marvel at, LTE network capacity, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 8MP autofocus camera, etc. The list is long.

The biggest question mark is related to the battery performance of the smartphone – there is a lot of hardware that the 1830mAh unit has to deal with. The lack of dedicated camera button and the questionable UI design are mostly a matter of personal taste.

Carrier IQ, the beleaguered wireless metrics provider, “vigorously disagrees” with anyone who says it violates wiretap laws — and insists its software “makes your phone better” by delivering information on device performance to wireless operators.

The company admits a great deal of information on a cellphone is “available” to it. But Carrier IQ re-asserted that its software doesn’t record or transmit any actual content.

For example, the software can tell if a text message is sent accurately, according to the company’s statement, but the software doesn’t know what was said.

In a video posted on YouTube, system administrator Trevor Eckhart appeared to demonstrate that Carrier IQ logs users’ every keystroke. Carrier IQ denies this, and some security experts agree. Dan Rosenberg, a senior consultant at Vital Security Research, told the Los Angeles Times that he had reverse-engineered the software and found that it didn’t record keystrokes, but used “keystroke events” as part of the application.

What that means: Carrier IQ’s software can confirm when a button was pressed, but that doesn’t mean it’s sending a log of those button presses back to the company’s servers.

Now Carrier IQ explicitly states that this doesn’t happen: “Our software does not record, store or transmit the contents of SMS messages, email, photographs, audio or video,” the company’s statement reads.

As a matter of law, Carrier IQ says, your privacy is protected. As a condition of its contracts with carriers, personal information must be respected; Carrier IQ says it operates under the laws of the “applicable jurisdiction.”

The three biggest cellphone user complaints are dropped calls, poor customer service, and short battery life, Carrier IQ says. Describing itself as an “agent of the operators,” the company says its software can help wireless providers optimize better address all of those complaints by providing them with information about exactly how well devices run on their networks.

Do we care about backward-compatibility in our game consoles? Why focus on GameCube games when so many Wii games are out there to be played?

The Xbox 360 started adding backwards-compatibility with a list of Xbox games, then stopped. Handhelds are, arguably, the more important territory for backward-compatible gaming: Finding small, cheap used Game Boy Advance cartridges or UMD discs to stick in your handheld game system is no easier than hunting for old PS2 games. Nintendo had Game Boy Advance support on the Nintendo DS, then dropped it. The 3DS supports DS games. Downloadable game stores are repositories for retro.

The trend's growing in the app age: Apple's App Store, Steam, and GOG (Good Old Games) are all cheap, gigantic catalogs for games, brimming with old titles. Good Old Games is a favorite around the CNET offices: retro games are cheap and plentiful, although you'll need a PC to play. Steam's frequent sales offer classic games for next to nothing. The bigger concern I see with the future of backward-compatibility is not what happens with old discs, but with old downloadable games with DRM.

Will a PlayStation 4 play or import PS3 games bought over PSN? The 3DS finally allows digital transfers of old DSi Shop games, but some titles are prevented from making the leap if they're no longer on Nintendo's e-shop: like, inexplicably, one pinball game I purchased. If you really care, buy an old console/handheld. Plenty of Dreamcast and Game Boy fans rally around old hardware they've held onto or picked up again. Old games can be re-released by the dozens on compilation discs and for download. Once a software collection's sufficiently developed, backwards compatibility is dropped.

Tucci is marvelous, and as a balance, Toby Jones is brought in as sidekick scientist to Weaving's perfectly pitched Schmidt.

Use your keywords naturally. Your visitors will be reading your content. If it is loaded with keyword phrases, it soon becomes obvious.
